With the college football season at about the halfway point, I’ve been talking with fellow fans this week about what Georgia needs to do this season to make it to Atlanta and beyond.
My brother Tim has no doubt about what’s needed: “Only one thing, get their best players back on the field, Todd and Sony.”
Obviously, it would be a big help if Todd Gurley is reinstated. I know Nick Chubb has done a fantastic job carrying the load the past two weeks, but I couldn’t believe it when I saw fans caught up in the excitement of the wins over [More]

Ordinarily, you wouldn’t expect a game between the first-place team in the SEC East and the last place team in the SEC West to be considered that close a call, especially when the latter school has a 15-game conference losing streak.
But the phrase that’s popped up most frequently this week to describe Georgia’s game at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock Saturday against the Arkansas Razorbacks is “strength vs. strength,” and that’s a big reason why 10th-ranked UGA is only a 3.5 point favorite over the Hogs.
Arkansas leads the SEC and is the 10th best team in the nation in [More]

We should be getting used to this by now, but UGA fans rightfully have grown tired and frustrated over the carrot-and-stick routine fate seems to have in store for us.
As my son put it yesterday afternoon following the announcement of Todd Gurley’s suspension, Georgia is on a brutal run that combines bad luck with self-imposed pain from attempting to run a program with some integrity in a sport that provides no reward for it.
Choose your poison: When the Dogs aren’t playing shorthanded and losing because of self-inflicted wounds due to the school’s strict policies, or aren’t having victory snatched from [More]

Chatting this week with several South Carolina fans about the upcoming game with Georgia, I’ve noticed they don’t appear to have much confidence at all in their defense, which got sliced and diced by Texas A&M, struggled early on with East Carolina and ranks last in the SEC. But they feel better about their offense now that tailback Mike Davis is back, even if they aren’t that confident overall about the consistency of quarterback Dylan Thompson.
But despite that they still feel pretty good about the Gamecocks’ chances against UGA simply because the game is in Columbia. In other words, they [More]

Bulldogs reserve linebacker Davin Bellamy, a redshirt freshman, was arrested early Saturday morning on charges of DUI and speeding, which means Jordan Jenkins may not get quite as much relief as expected at outside linebacker during the Clemson and South Carolina games.
So, yet another off-season arrest for Mark Richt’s team, and I’m not sure what’s left to say about that other than I’ve given up trying to figure out why so many college players these days keep doing dumb things that they know are going to cost them playing time.
Anyway, let’s dive into some Junkyard Mail. …

A week ago today, my wife and daughter and I were standing in line outside 221B Baker Street on a cool, rainy London morning, waiting for the Sherlock Holmes Museum to open, when the couple standing in front of us turned around.
Apparently noticing the G on my baseball cap and my daughter’s red sweatshirt, the woman asked, “Where are y’all from?”
“Atlanta,” I replied, and she smiled. “We’re from Augusta. Go Dogs!”
Turned out they were also parents of a UGA grad and were over early for the British Open.
I don’t know what the odds are of us queuing up right [More]

This week saw 11 members of Mark Richt’s 2014 Georgia football team named to the Athlon Sports Preseason All-SEC Team: Tailback Todd Gurley, inside linebacker Ramik Wilson and placekicker Marshall Morgan were named to the first team, while flanker Malcolm Mitchell, center David Andrews and outside linebackers Leonard Floyd and Jordan Jenkins were second-team picks. Tackle John Theus and cornerback Damian Swann were picked for the third team, and defensive end Ray Drew and inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera were named to the fourth team. Gurley, Wilson and Floyd also were named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-America Team this week.
