A few more random thoughts and observations from Georgia’s win over Arkansas and other SEC games …
I complained in my post-game Blawg, which you can read here, about how conservative Georgia’s offensive playcalling was for most of the second half in Little Rock. Trying to sit on a lead is never fun to watch.
But I absolutely loved the way Mike Bobo opened the game.
Everyone, including the Arkansas defense, was expecting Nick Chubb to get the ball, and instead Bobo had Hutson Mason defy his reputation by going long to Chris Conley for 48 yards. And then follow that up [More]

If you’re going to lose focus defensively, draw a bunch of flags and go conservative in your offensive playcalling in the second half of an SEC game, and you still want to win, you better have had a heck of a first half.
Fortunately for Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs, that certainly was the case Saturday at Little Rock’s War Memorial Stadium as the Dawgs came out fast, led by 32 at the half, and then held on for an important 45-32 road win over a hard-fighting, never-say-die bunch of Razorbacks.
The game opened with a textbook 13-play, 75-yard drive by the Hogs, [More]

We should be getting used to this by now, but UGA fans rightfully have grown tired and frustrated over the carrot-and-stick routine fate seems to have in store for us.
As my son put it yesterday afternoon following the announcement of Todd Gurley’s suspension, Georgia is on a brutal run that combines bad luck with self-imposed pain from attempting to run a program with some integrity in a sport that provides no reward for it.
Choose your poison: When the Dogs aren’t playing shorthanded and losing because of self-inflicted wounds due to the school’s strict policies, or aren’t having victory snatched from [More]

There’s a bit of a disconnect this week between the Vegas oddsmakers, cautious Georgia fans and those folks in orange pants, who believe history is in their favor as they come into Sanford Stadium Saturday.
With the Dawgs favored by 17 to 19 points this week, Georgia is clearly the favorite of the folks who want you to bet on the game, but with another noon kickoff that could diminish the noise and crowd energy level Between the Hedges, a still-suspect secondary facing a team with talented receivers, and the Dogs’ own passing game still not completely out of the wrapping, [More]

Happy Labor Day! Hope you’re all enjoying a great holiday. If you haven’t checked out my initial Georgia-Clemson post-game Blawg (“Welcome to the Todd Gurley Appreciation Society”), you can do so here. Now, here are some additional observations from Georgia’s season-opener …
Mark Richt asked the Georgia fans, particularly the students, to come early and be loud, and that certainly was the case Saturday night, especially on key third-down plays. A couple of times, including after Todd Gurley’s kickoff return touchdown, the decibel level came close to the all-time high achieved last year against LSU. Clemson had to burn two [More]

I’ll have more on Georgia’s 45-21 triumph over old rival Clemson on a steamy night in Sanford Stadium, but first I wanted to offer a few quick thoughts:
Todd Gurley is one of those special players we need to savor while we have the tremendous pleasure of watching him. He certainly placed himself prominently in the early-season Heisman Trophy conversations with Saturday night’s stats: 198 yards on 15 carries and four touchdowns, plus a 100-yard-plus kickoff return that was a thing of beauty.
I’d said before the game that I wasn’t crazy about the game plan to play all Georgia’s tailbacks, meaning [More]

This week saw 11 members of Mark Richt’s 2014 Georgia football team named to the Athlon Sports Preseason All-SEC Team: Tailback Todd Gurley, inside linebacker Ramik Wilson and placekicker Marshall Morgan were named to the first team, while flanker Malcolm Mitchell, center David Andrews and outside linebackers Leonard Floyd and Jordan Jenkins were second-team picks. Tackle John Theus and cornerback Damian Swann were picked for the third team, and defensive end Ray Drew and inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera were named to the fourth team. Gurley, Wilson and Floyd also were named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-America Team this week.

What sort of football season should Georgia Bulldogs fans expect in 2014?
Speaking at his UGA Day appearance in Augusta earlier this week, The Augusta Chronicle reported, head coach Mark Richt said he hoped fans have “high expectations.”
“We all have high expectations for our team for our season,” Richt said. “The fact we have Hutson Mason as our starting quarterback [replacing the departed Aaron Murray] doesn’t make me feel like it can hold us back in any way. I think he’s ready for the challenge. I feel a lot better about him as a starter now that he’s done it [More]
