There’s no better way to get in the mood for Georgia-Florida week than to look back at the rivalry’s storied past. (Contrary to what some Gators fans believe, that begins way before 1990.)
And one natural result of looking back is thinking about favorite plays. This weekend, when Georgia travels to Columbia to meet the Gamecocks, it will mark the third week of the 2014 football season. But in my first year attending games as a UGA alum, mid-September was when the season actually started!
That was 1974, a year of important events in my life that are now marking their 40th anniversary.
It’s 40 years since I graduated from the University of Georgia. Forty years since I started working at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. And 40 years since I became a UGA football season ticket holder and Bulldog Club member.

The other day a Bulldogs fan asked me to look into my crystal ball a bit and predict whether potential Heisman Trophy candidate Todd Gurley will go down in the annals of UGA football as one of the program’s greatest backs.
My answer was that, if he is 100 percent healthy this season and remains that way, he certainly would at least merit being in the conversation.
